Content Notes/Warnings: BDSM and painplay as a coping mechanism.
Sometimes they come together and it's gentle; sometimes it's just to show how much they love each other, how grateful they are to know they have each other, how happy they are they're not alone.
More often there's other reasons, though; more often someone wants to be left hurting.
For Agony, it's something concrete. He can show the bruises and say yes, the pain is physical, it's not just something hanging around the edges of his mind. When it's hurting too much for no reason, he asks them to leave him bleeding, to leave marks that might not fade, so that the pain is coming from somewhere, so that he can maybe do something to help it.
For Contempt, it's humbling. The ache reminds her she's not above everyone else, that she can get hurt, that other people can be stronger and better than she is. They leave bruises on her arms and she wears short sleeves, keeps them constantly in view to prove to herself that she's not untouchable.
For Envy, it's comfort. When he has to be away from them, he feel the pain and he sees the bruises and he knows he belongs to someone, that he has something nobody else does, he has them. It makes it easier not to want what everyone else has when he has a way to remember what's his.
Sometimes they're all having good days and the bruises aren't necessary; but the good days are rare, and more often somebody needs something, and the pain is the best way they know to provide it.
